Tale of a Ghost Website
Beware!January 07, 2017
More than a billion Websites are online . Only 5% of all those websites are visited by 99% of internet users *. From those 5%, only a few succeed in converting visitors into real customers. If your site is not in the top 5% or if you feel it's useless... you probably own a Ghost Website!
The simple fact that you would not be well ranked in search engines on relevant key words that are actually searched by people, shows either an issue with the performance of your Website, or a problem with your strategy. Professionals are here to make sure it is not a performance issue. Good professionals can also help re-think your strategy.
For every online project you must ask questions like "what makes my service or product unique or indispensable?" "what's my added value?" "Who should visit my site?" "What do I expect from my visitors?" Answering those questions is how we start designing a proper strategy and user experience.
Many companies call us for help after publishing their Website. We see a lot of "cheaply made" CMS Websites. And then we get the classic questions: "We just finished our site, can you help us improve our visits?" or "We've spend so much time on it, can you help us to make this project work?". Unfortunately, in most cases, the answer is simply "no".
Time and money spent on Ghost Websites is literally lost in cyberspace. And it can get worse: poor design might just discredit your business image and perception for the ones that finally find you. And when you think it can't get any worst, wait until security issues in you average CMS get exploited by a hacker robot, to abuse your server and customers.
UX and UX strategy is where at least 80% of your budget should have been spent in the first place, before and during development, not after. If you target human beings, design and user experience are not just steps in your project. It is the project!

What's a Ghost Website?
A Ghost Website is live but not quite alive. And probably for good reasons. Typically, all you would get is a sporadic visit once in a while from someone who has the curiosity to type the domain printed on your business card, if it's not too long. The simple fact that you would not be well ranked in search engines on relevant key words that are actually searched by people, shows either an issue with the performance of your Website, or a problem with your strategy. Strategy... what strategy?
Not everything depends on your website's technical aspect. If your product or service is reliable, unique, or just necessary, people will be interested in you. It is your best bet for online success, provided that this interest is well represented in your website. For every online project you must ask questions like "what makes my service or product unique or indispensable?" "what's my added value?" "Who should visit my site?" "What do I expect from my visitors?" Answering those questions is how we start designing a proper strategy and user experience.
The cost of "no-strategy"
Nowadays many tools and CMS allow anyone to throw a website online. But it is generally a bad idea to hire an amateur designer or a cheap developer in the urgency. "If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur".Many companies call us for help after publishing their Website. But wait! Can't SEO resuscitate my Ghost Website?
No. There is no magic wand to make a search engine believe that a slow average template website with no prominent added value would be worth mentioning on top of all its competitors. You can't trick search engines anymore. Your Website must respond to real UX values, provide quality content and be developed around a proper user centered strategy.UX and UX strategy is where at least 80% of your budget should have been spent in the first place, before and during development, not after.
